Using the Internet to Evaluate Travel Clubs

Dec 8th, 2011 Steve Albright

For awhile there in the early 2000s, it seemed as though vacation, or travel, clubs had fallen out of popularity. Travel clubs are not timeshares, mind you, which have never seemed to fall out of favor since the first day they were conceived.

A travel club, rather, is a club that you pay a large initial membership fee to in exchange for being able to book discount travel to desirable locations. In the nineties, travel clubs were the kings of the hotel conference room, traveling city to city, holding presentations, signing up new members.

Eventually, though, travel clubs gained a terrible reputation because many of them failed to fulfill their end of the bargain. They would collect their fees, move on to the next town, and when it came time to actually book a vacation, the members were continually denied. This location was unavailable, this form was filled out incorrectly, this date does not work.

The few clubs that were respectable were casualties of the rest of the scam pulling travel clubs, and for awhile, it seemed like the days of the travel club were past.

But the world we live in is obviously different than it was as few as ten or twenty years ago. These days, the internet has opened all new doors of possibilities for businesses of all types, and the travel club has seen a type of revival.

Now, there are no more hotel conference rooms or tiny Styrofoam cups of coffee. Instead there are websites, run by LGN Prosperity, Primo Vacations, and Club ABC, amongst others, listing destinations and deals, showing pictures of condos and cruise ships. Whether this will be a true revival of the travel club has yet to be seen.

The hope is that within all the myriad of LGN Prosperity, Primo Vacations, and Club ABC will be real vacation clubs that honor their deals. The internet offers a level of anonymity that was never possible when an actual representative had to stand in front of a roomful of people and give his name when conducting business. This makes it even easier to take advantage of people.

If you are interested in joining a travel club or seeing what they have to offer, make sure to do your research and take some time to evaluate the reputation of the club before you actually send anyone any money. That is the benefit of companies embracing the internet. Their customers can embrace it as well, detailing their experiences good and bad. Use that to your advantage and you are a lot likelier to have a better experience.
