Find The Best Deals On Poker Chips

Apr 29th, 2011 Mathieu Courchesne

When I grew up and watched my dad play poker, the only chips he used were the plastic type, these he stored in a revolving wooden holder. Years later and the scene has greatly changed; now poker chips come in a wide variety at varied prices.

Low Cost poker chips

If you're not concerned about having casino quality poker chips, then plastic poker chips are a good option. These are easy to find from online retailers of poker items. They're not expensive and last just as long as you want them to.

Chip manufacturers

Chip makers such Bicycle have two sets of plastic chips that come in travel cases: the Poker Portfolio which includes 300 chips and sells for 15 to 20 bucks and 2 decks of cards; the Poker Attache which includes 500 chips, 2 decks of cards, and a dealer button.

Composite and Clay Poker Chips

If you're interested in purchasing a set of the heavier chips used in casinos and on television shows like the World Series of Poker and World Poker Tour, then you'll want to consider composite or clay Poker chips.

These chips come in four weights namely:

* 7.5 grams

* 8.5 grams

* 9.0 grams

* 11.5 grams

Heavier chips are prefered as opposed to ligher chips because they last longer and also provide a greater tactile and sound experience when they click against each other. Handle samples to test their density before making your purchase. I personally prefer the 11.5 grams but go feels good for you.

The 9-gram chips are a marked step up from the lightweight plastic chips, and are an excellent value for the occasional player. Design options are very limited, however, the 11.5-gram chips are nearly 28 percent heavier than the 9-gram and, in my experience, are available in the widest assortment of design options. The 13- and 13.5-gram chips are the heaviest I've seen available, but you'll pay a premium for that extra weight (about 13 to 17 percent heavier than 11.5-gram chips).

Chip design options

Composite and clay chips are available in a single solid color, two colors, and three colors. Personally I prefer the two-color chips, you should also expect to pay more for three-color chips.

Number of chips to buy

The two basic options here are 300 chips or 500 chips, although sets of 1,000 chips are available -- and other sized sets are available (I've seen 200, 400, 650 and 700). Also, you can almost always buy chips by the piece or in smaller sets.

Personally, I consider 300 chips suitable for 5 players in a game of Texas Hold'Em with a support for up to 6 players. If you want to host more than 6 players then you should get the 500-poker chip set. Do the math when considering the chips to purchase to determine the cost of the chipset.
